Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

A no communication with RCM condition could be caused by damaged wiring harness or connector, damaged DLC or RCM internal fault.

  1. Check RCM connector for damage

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C2041A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect component and harness side of RCM connector C2041A, terminal No. 5 (Light Blue wire, circuit No. 70) for damage. See Figure . If no damage is found, go to next step. If damage is found, repair or replace as necessary. Reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Check DLC for damage

Inspect DLC and DLC terminal No. 7 (Light Blue wire) for damage. See Fig 1 . If no damage is found, go to next step. If damage is found, repair or replace as necessary. Reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system.
  3. Check circuit for open

Measure resistance between harness side of RCM connector C2041A, terminal No. 5 and DLC terminal No. 7 (Light Blue wire). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace RCM. Reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. Clear all DTCs.
