Diagnostics Disabling Procedure (Seats Removed)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The following diagnostics deactivation procedure should not be used when replacing air bag system components. If replacing air bag system components, see COMPONENT REPLACEMENT DISABLING PROCEDURE  .

This procedure should only be used when performing air bag system diagnostics or repairs.

  1. Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to clockspring electrical connector, located at top of steering column (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR  .
  3. Remove passenger-side air bag module. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to passenger-side air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag). Remove front seats. See FRONT SEAT  .
  4. CAUTION: Removing side curtain air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side curtain air bags. Side curtain air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side curtain air bags on these models. Do not remove side curtain air bag bridge resistors unless directed.
  5. On models equipped with side air bags, install Air Bag Simulators (418-133/40-009) on harness side of right and left side air bag module harness connectors. On all models, remove right front and rear door scuff plates.
  6. Release tab and open right seat belt guide cover. Remove seat belt guide anchor nut. Remove weatherstrip from right B-pillar. Remove right B-pillar assist handle caps, screws and handle. Remove right B-pillar trim panel.
  7. Push in on release tab, disconnect right seat belt pretensioner electrical connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-133/40-009) on harness side of pretensioner electrical connector. Repeat procedure for left seat belt pretensioner. Reconnect negative battery cable.
