Removal (4.2L)

CAUTION: Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft during removal and installation procedure or fuel system control will be out of time. This could possibly cause engine damage.
  1. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke.
  2. Remove CMP sensor. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (4.2L)  under CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR.
  3. Disconnect EGR valve vacuum hose. Remove EGR valve tube upper fitting.
  4. Remove EGR valve bolts and nut. Remove EGR valve. See Fig 1.

  5. Remove CMP synchronizer bolt. See Fig 2.

  6. Lift out CMP synchronizer. Oil pump drive shaft may come out with camshaft synchronizer. See Fig 3.
