Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag simulator. Turn pinion shaft to release steering wheel from steering column shaft. See Fig 1 . Pull steering wheel away from steering column and disconnect steering wheel-to-clockspring electrical connector. Remove steering wheel.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel pinion shaft to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Remove left front side air bag simulator and reconnect connectors, if equipped. Remove left pretensioner simulator and reconnect connectors. DO NOT activate air bag system at this time. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at remaining deployable devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
