Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

An AIR BAG warning light that is continuously illuminated may be caused by damaged wiring, damaged or burnt out AIR BAG warning light bulb or damaged instrument cluster.

  1. Check air bag diagnostic monitor

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Access and disconnect diagnostic monitor connector C2003A. See DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If AIR BAG warning light is off, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light is on, replace diagnostic monitor. Reconnect and activate system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under .

  2. Check instrument cluster ground

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure diagnostic monitor connector C2003A is disconnected. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Measure resistance between ground and digital instrument cluster connector C267C, terminal No. 19 (Black or Black/Red wire) or analog instrument cluster connector C266B, terminal No. 11 (Black wire or Black/Red wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black or Black/Red wire (circuit No. 19). Reconnect and activate system. Perform system operation check.

  3. Check AIR BAG warning light circuit for short

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure diagnostic monitor connector and instrument cluster connectors are disconnected. Measure resistance between air bag diagnostic monitor connector terminal No. 16 (Orange wire) and ground. See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Orange wire. Reconnect and activate system. Perform system operation check.

  4. Check AIR BAG warning light indicator bulb

    With instrument cluster disconnected, remove AIR BAG warning light socket and bulb from rear of instrument cluster. Check for continuity between terminals of light socket and bulb. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. Reconnect and activate system. Perform system operation check. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace instrument panel light socket and bulb. Reconnect and activate system. Perform system operation check.
