Fuel Tank Shutoff Solenoid Valve: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Econoline and 2002 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Maximum gap between solenoid valve and fuel tank sealing surface must not be exceeded. If gap is exceeded, fuel leakage may occur resulting in a flammable mixture, which could ignite and cause personal injury.

Lubricate NEW "O" rings with 5W-30 motor oil. Ensure threads on valve and tank are clean and in good condition. Install components by hand. Inspect threads if resistance is felt during installation. Check gap between solenoid valve and tank sealing surface in center portion of each hexagonal flat with a feeler gauge. gap must not exceed 05 mm (.002 in). feeler gauge must be inserted to a depth of 1.6 to 3.1 mm (.06 to .12 in) to make sure measurement is accurate. If gap exceeds allowable limit, remove valve, inspect sealing surfaces, replace and lubricate seal and repeat tightening and inspection procedure. Ensure fuel lines are aligned before tightening. DO NOT cross-thread fittings. Tighten fittings to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Perform COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS LEAK TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - EEC-V - NGV article.
