Selector Lever Cable - Column Shift: Installation

  1. From inside the vehicle, feed the shift cable through the opening in the bulkhead and downward toward the transmission.
  2. Seat the shift cable rubber grommet in the bulkhead opening.
  3. Connect the shift cable to the steering column.
    1. Install the new shift cable retainer.
    2. Connect the shift cable to the steering column bracket.
    3. Connect the shift cable to the transmission selector lever arm and support.

  4. Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
  5. Hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
  6. Rotate the manual lever forward until the travel stops. Then rotate the manual lever back 2 detents to the (D) position.

  7. NOTE: 4.6/5.4L shown, 4.2L similar.

  8. Connect the shift cable to the shift cable bracket. Do not connect the shift cable to the manual control lever at this time.
  9. Connect the shift cable to the manual control lever and lock the adjuster.

  10. CAUTION: Failure to route the selector lever cable in the routing clip can allow the cable to rest on exhaust components causing damage to the cable.

  11. Route the selector lever cable in the routing clip.
  12. Verify the vehicle will start in PARK and NEUTRAL. Verify the reverse lamps illuminate in the REVERSE position. If not, check the adjustment of the transmission range (TR) sensor. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E .
  13. Install the 2 screws and the lower dash panel.
