Removal and Installation

WARNING:
Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
CAUTION:
Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.
CAUTION:
When installing a new ABS module or HCU, do not use the pump motor harness as a carrying handle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the HCU assembly.
CAUTION:
When disconnecting the brake lines, do not allow brake fluid to drip onto the ABS module or premature failure may occur.
CAUTION:
Do not allow brake fluid to drip into the ABS module electrical connector cavity or premature failure may occur.
- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - 4.2L for vehicles equipped with a 4.2L engine, FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - 4.6L (2V) for vehicles with equipped with a 4.6L (2V) engine, or FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - 5.4L (3V) for vehicles equipped with a 5.4L (3V) engine.
- Remove the 4 brake line-to-HCU fittings.
- To install, tighten to 17 Nm (13 lb-ft).
- Remove the 2 HCU-to-bracket nuts and the HCU.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Remove the ABS module. For additional information, refer to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE .
- If necessary, remove the 3 HCU-bracket-to-frame bolts and the bracket.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to BRAKE SYSTEM BLEEDING .
NOTE:
The brake lines must be installed in the same location as removed.
NOTE:
The HCU bracket does not have to be removed in order to complete this procedure.
