- Inspect Components For Small Leaks -
Check for presence of fuel cap, but do not tighten at this time. Ensure canister vent is seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP canister and purge valve, EVAP canister and fuel vapor vent valve and fuel vapor valve tube to fuel tank for cuts or loose connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. If problem was found, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step. If no problems were found, go to next step.
- Check EVAP Test Port
Disconnect and plug EVAP return tube at intake manifold. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system does not pass leak test, go to step 4. If system passes leak test, go to next step.
- Inspect Fuel Filler Cap
Check fuel filler cap for damage. If fuel filler cap is damaged, replace cap and go to next step. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step.
- Check For Small Leaks At Fuel Filler Cap & EVAP Test Port
Move EVAP tester from EVAP test port to fuel filler pipe. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port for leaks. If a leak is detected, repair or replace component and go to next step. If a no leak is detected, install fuel filler cap and perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
- Check For Leaks Other Than Fuel Filler Cap
If system passed in step 2)
, perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If system did not pass in step 2)
, replace fuel filler cap and go to next step.
- Check For Small Leak With Tester Set At Fill Position
Move EVAP tester from fuel filler tube to EVAP test port. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Ensure tester is in FILL position. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). If system holds pressure, go to next step. If system does not hold pressure, discontinue pressurizing and go to step 8.
- Check For Small Leaks In Complete EVAP System
Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP hoses between EVAP canister and purge valve, EVAP canister and fuel vapor vent valve, fuel vapor valve tube to fuel tank and fuel filler pipe and fuel filler cap for cuts or loose connections. If no leak is detected, discontinue pressurizing system and go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
- Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Return Tube & EVAP Canister
On Sable and Taurus, disconnect fuel vapor return tube at EVAP canister and plug tube. On all other models, disconnect EVAP canister outlet tube at fuel vapor "T" fitting and plug outlet tube. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system. While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP system between intake manifold and canister vent solenoid. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat step 6 to verify repair, then go to next step. If no leak is detected, using scan tool, open canister vent solenoid by selecting STOP button and go to next step.
- Check For Small Leak Between Fuel Vapor Return Tube & Fuel Filler Pipe
Move EVAP tester from EVAP test port to fuel filler pipe. On Sable and Taurus, transfer plug in EVAP canister tube to fuel vapor valve tube. On all other models, transfer plug in EVAP canister outlet tube to fuel vapor "T" fitting. Change leak tester to FILL position. Pressurize system. While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel tank vapor tube to fuel tank. Check fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel vapor valve tube and fuel filler pipe. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step. If no leak is detected, go to next step.
- Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe
On Sable and Taurus, reconnect fuel vapor valve tube to EVAP canister. On all other models, reconnect EVAP canister outlet tube to fuel vapor "T" fitting. Complete evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system did not pass, go to step 6. If EVAP system passes leak test, restore system to normal configuration and repeat evaporative emissions system leak test. If system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
