Removal (Vehicles With 2.0L Engines)
- Centralize steering wheel and lock it in position.
- Remove bolt and rotate clamp plate to disconnect steering column shaft from flexible coupling. See Figure.
- Release retaining clips, and disconnect upper retainer. Remove floor seal. See Figure.
- Remove pinch bolt, and steering column flexible coupling. See Figure.
- Loosen the front road wheels nuts.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove front road wheels.
- Remove radiator splash shield (if equipped). See Figure.
- Remove lower splash shield. See Figure.
- Disconnect catalytic converter from center muffler. Discard gasket and nuts. See Figure.
- Loosen tie-rod end retaining nuts.
- Using a Ball Joint Separator 211-001 (T00L-3290-D), detach tie-rod ends. See TIE ROD ENDS .
- Detach power steering high-pressure line support bracket. See Figure.
- Detach power steering low-pressure line support bracket. See Fig 1.
- Detach high-pressure line union, and return line union. Allow all fluid to drain into a suitable container. See Figure.
- Remove power steering gear mounting bolts, and remove power steering gear. See Fig 2.
CAUTION:
When removing the floor seal do not damage the retaining clips.
CAUTION:
Leave the retaining nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs when detaching the tie-rod ends.
CAUTION:
When the tie-rod ends are separated, the ball joint seals should be protected to prevent damage.
CAUTION:
When the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports must be capped to prevent dirt ingress.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the pressure check valve does not fall out of the valve body pressure port when the power steering gear is being removed.
