Ignition & Starter Relays

  1. Remove relay to be tested. Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 and all other terminals of relay. See Fig 1 . If resistance is greater than 5 ohms between terminal No. 2 and all terminals, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less between terminal No. 2 any other terminal, replace relay.
  2. Using 2 fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage to terminals No. 2 and 3 of relay. Measure voltage at terminal No. 4 of relay. If battery voltage exists, leave jumper wires connected and go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace relay.
  3. Ground terminal No. 1 of relay. Measure voltage at terminal No. 5 of relay. If battery voltage exists, relay is okay at this time. If battery voltage does not exist, replace relay.
