Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Removing the steering wheel without using a puller can damage the column bearings.

    All vehicles 

  1. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING WHEEL .
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  3. Remove the screw and the lower steering column shroud.
  4. Remove the 2 screws and the upper steering column shroud.
  5. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement. For additional information, refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .
  6. Disconnect the multi-function switch electrical connectors.
  7. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  8. Remove the screw and disconnect the shift cable, if equipped.

    9. Vehicles built after 11/29/2004 

  9. Disconnect the overdrive cancel switch electrical connector, if equipped.
  10. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect the brake shift interlock actuator electrical connector

    12. All vehicles 

    NOTE: Always install a new bolt.
  12. Remove and discard the intermediate steering column shaft-to-steering column shaft bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  13. Disconnect the 2 steering column electrical connectors.
    14. NOTE: Make sure the column support is aligned before tightening the nuts.
  14. Remove the 4 steering column support bracket nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
    15. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  15. Lower the steering column assembly and separate the steering column assembly from the intermediate steering column shaft.
  16. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  17. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
