Valve Train Analysis - Engine Running, Camshaft Lobe Lift - Push Rod Engine
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Check the lift of each lobe in consecutive order and make a note of the readings.
- Remove the valve covers.
- Remove the rocker arm seat bolts, rocker arm seats and the rocker arms.
- Make sure the valve tapper is seated against the camshaft. Install (1) the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture so the ball socket adapter of the indicator is on top of the valve tappet or (2) Dial Indicator Gauge Adapter is on top of the push rod and in the same plane as the valve tappet push rod movement.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Connect an auxiliary starter switch in the starting circuit. Crank the engine with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Bump the crankshaft over until the valve tappet is on the base circle of the camshaft lobe. At this point, the valve tappet will be in its lowest position. If checking during engine assembly, turn the crankshaft using a socket and ratchet.
- Zero the dial indicator. Continue to rotate the crankshaft slowly until the valve tappet is in the fully-raised position (highest indicator reading).
- Remove the Dial Indicator with Holding Fixture, the Dial Indicator Gauge Adapter and the auxiliary starter switch.
- Install the rocker arms, the rocker arm seats and the rocker arm seat bolts.
- Install the valve covers.
- Install the spark plugs.
NOTE:
If lift on any lobe is below specified service limits, install a new camshaft and new valve tappets.
