Axle Shaft: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove the differential housing cover. For additional information, refer to DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING COVER .
- Remove the disc brake caliper bolts and position aside the disc brake caliper.
- Using mechanic's wire, position aside the disc brake caliper.
- Remove the brake disc.
- Remove the differential pinion shaft.
- Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
- Remove the differential pinion shaft.
- Remove the U-washers.
- Push in on the axle shafts.
- Remove the 2 U-washers.
- Remove the 2 axle shafts.
- Remove the differential gears by rotating the 2 differential pinion gears and washers to the differential case window.
- Remove the 2 differential side gears and clutch packs and tag them "right" and "left".
NOTE: If the Diagnostic Chart has directed the servicing of the differential clutch packs, the packs can be removed at this point. For additional information, refer to DIFFERENTIAL CASE AND RING GEAR - TRACTION-LOK .
CAUTION:
Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves.
CAUTION:
Do not damage the axle shaft oil seals.
