Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford Pickup, 2005 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2005 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2005 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected.

    Vehicles equipped with 6.8L gas or 6.0L diesel engines 

  1. Remove the engine air cleaner. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING .
  2. Vehicles equipped with 5.4L engines 

  3. Remove the air cleaner intake pipe. For additional information, refer to AIR CLEANER INTAKE PIPE -- 5.4L (3V) .
  4. Vehicles equipped with 6.0L diesel 

    NOTE: If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler duct to prevent the duct from blowing off.
  5. Loosen the clamps and remove the duct.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

  6. All vehicles 

  7. Disconnect the steering gear coupling shield from the line fittings and slide the shield upward on the intermediate shaft.

  8. Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.

  9. CAUTION: During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.
  10. Disconnect the power steering lines.
    • Discard the Teflon® seals.

  11. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  12. NOTE: F250-F350 shown, F450-F550 similar.
  13. Remove the cotter pin and the drag link-to-sector shaft nut.
    • Discard the cotter pin.

  14. Using the special tool, disconnect the drag link from the sector shaft arm.

  15. F-250, F-350 vehicles 

    NOTE: The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
  16. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
    • Discard the bolts.

  17. F-450, F-550 vehicles 

    NOTE: The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
  18. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
    • Discard the bolts.

  19. All vehicles 

    NOTE: The sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. The nut must not be reused.
  20. Remove the sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut.
    • Discard the nut.

  21. F-250, F-350 vehicles 

  22. Using the special tool, remove the sector shaft arm.

  23. F-450, F-550 vehicles 

  24. Using the special tool and 2 grade 8 bolts, 90 mm (3.54 in), separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear.

  25. All vehicles 

  26. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Using the special tool, install 2 new Teflon® seals on the power steering line fittings.
    • Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM FILLING .
