Fuel Rail: Removal

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING: Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before working on or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    All vehicles 

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Pressure Relief in FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  4. Disconnect the fuel line. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  5. Remove the retaining nut for the transmission fluid indicator and tube.

  6. Remove the retaining bolt and position the transmission fluid indicator and tube aside.

  8. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor vacuum hose and the electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the eight fuel injector electrical connectors.

  10. Remove the crankcase vent tube.

  11. Vehicles with 5.4L engine 

  12. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor hoses.

  13. Disconnect the upper and lower fittings and position the EGR valve tube aside.

  14. Vehicles with 4.6L engine 

  15. Disconnect the upper and lower fittings and remove the EGR valve tube aside.

  16. All vehicles 

  17. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve hose.

    NOTE: Remove the fuel rail and fuel injectors as an assembly.

  19. Remove the four bolts and the fuel rail.

  21. Remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail.
