Removal and Installation

    All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  3. Remove the turbocharger inlet tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - TURBOCHARGER .
  4. NOTE: If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler pipe to prevent the pipe from blowing off.

  5. Loosen the clamps and remove the charge air cooler pipe.
  6. Disconnect the oil level indicator and tube from the stator.

  7. Disconnect the glow plug wire retainer. Remove the nut and position the oil level indicator and tube aside.

  8. Disconnect the glow plug module electrical connectors.

  9. Early build vehicles 

    CAUTION: Do not use power tools when removing or installing the nut.
    CAUTION: Use care not to overtighten the nut during installation.

  10. Position back the boot and remove the nut. Disconnect the cables.
  11. All vehicles 

  12. Disconnect the exhaust back pressure electrical connector and pushpin retainer.

  13. Disconnect the exhaust back pressure tube at the exhaust manifold.

  14. Remove the retaining nuts and glow plug module.

  15. NOTE: Power stud removed for clarity.

  16. Remove the three retaining nuts and the glow plug module mounting bracket.
  17. CAUTION: To prevent engine damage, do not use air-powered tools when installing the valve cover.
    NOTE: Mark the position of the valve cover bolts for valve cover bolt installation.
  18. Remove the 11 retainers and the valve cover.
    • Clean and inspect the valve cover gasket.

  19. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
