Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Lincoln Town Car, 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, and 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform preliminary inspection before starting diagnostic procedure. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  1. Perform QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  . Record and repair all KOEO and KOER DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . Repair engine-related DTCs before transaxle-related DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Once DTCs are repaired, go to next step. If no KOEO or KOER DTCs were set, diagnose concern by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to step  5 .
  2. Check for continuous memory DTCs. If any DTCs are set, clear all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  . Perform TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  . Go to next step. If continuous memory DTCs are not present, go to step  4 .
  3. Re-check for continuous memory DTCs. Perform diagnostic test corresponding to DTC. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . Once repair is completed, go to next step.
  4. Perform RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  . Clear continuous memory DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  . Perform test drive to confirm transaxle is operating correctly. If no problems are present, repair is complete. If problem is still present, diagnose concern by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to next step.
  5. If electronic related symptoms are present, follow diagnostic tests instructed by electronic symptom procedure. Perform static and drive tests using transmission tester. Follow tester manufacturer's instructions. Go to next step. If no electronic related symptoms are present, diagnose concern by mechanical symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (MECHANICAL)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to step  7 .
  6. If transaxle problem was corrected during static and drive tests using transmission tester, then the PCM, vehicle harness and/or external inputs (sensors, switches) could be cause of problem. Diagnose possible intermittent problem using appropriate scan tool and transmission tester. See TEST Z: INTERMITTENT in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If transaxle problem was not corrected during static and drive tests using transmission tester, diagnose concern by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  or SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (MECHANICAL)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to next step.
  7. Verify that no problems or symptoms are present. Perform QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  . Clear memory DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  . If no DTCs are present and transaxle is operating properly, repair is complete. If transaxle is not operating properly, go to step  1 .
