Test Procedures

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Lincoln Town Car, 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, and 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. A no-drive condition can exist even with correct transmission fluid pressure, because of inoperative clutches or bands. The inoperative components can be located by substituting air pressure for fluid pressure to determine location of malfunction.
  2. Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid. Remove valve body assembly from transmission. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Using attaching screws, install Transmission Test Plate (T92P-7006-A) and gasket. Tighten bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
    3. NOTE: Air pressure should be regulated to 40 psi (2.8 km/cm2 ) maximum. Compressed air used for test should be filtered and dry to avoid contaminating transmission fluid.
  3. Using a rubber-tipped air nozzle, apply air pressure into appropriate test plate locations specified in the following tests. See Fig 1 . If servo or accumulator does not move when air is applied, clean and inspect to locate cause. If during test, 2 clutches apply or clutch fails to operate, check fluid passages in transmission case and front pump for blockage or damage.
