Test C: Digital Transmission Range Sensor

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Lincoln Town Car, 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, and 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
    NOTE: DTCs P0705 and P0708 cannot be set by an improperly adjusted TR sensor.
  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position and gearshift lever is in "P" position. Perform KOEO SELF-TEST and record DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If P0705 and P0708 are the only DTCs recorded, go to step  4 . If other DTCs are recorded, go to next step.
  2. With ignition switch turned to OFF position and gearshift lever in "P" position, ensure digital TR sensor wiring harness connector is fully seated. Apply parking brake. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Disconnect shift cable/linkage from manual lever. Ensure digital TR sensor is adjusted properly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If digital TR sensor is adjusted properly, leave shift cable/linkage disconnected and go to next step. If digital TR sensor is not adjusted properly, adjust digital TR sensor. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Place manual lever in overdrive position (3 detent positions back from Park). Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Reconnect shift cable/linkage. Ensure shift cable/linkage is properly adjusted. If shift cable/linkage adjustment is okay, go to next step. If shift cable/linkage adjustment is not okay, adjust shift cable/linkage. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. After adjustment, go to next step.
  4. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Disconnect digital TR sensor connector. Inspect connector for damage, pushed out terminals, loose wires, missing or damaged seals, or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay and you were directed here to diagnose a DTC, go to next step. If connector was okay and you were directed here to diagnose a 4WD Low Neutral Sense concern, starting or back-up light problem, go to step  10 . If connector was repaired, erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. NOTE: If PID TR_D changes when wiggling harness, tapping on sensor or driving vehicle, problem may be intermittent.

  6. With ignition switch in OFF position, install scan tool. Connect TR sensor connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Follow on screen instructions and select PIDs TR, TR_D for diagnosing DTCs P0705, P1704 and P1705. Select PIDs TR and TR_V for diagnosing DTC P0708. Monitor scan tool while moving gearshift lever into each gear position. Stop at each position and wiggle TR sensor harness connector, tap lightly on TR sensor case and/or drive vehicle. Repeat for each gear position and compare values with specifications. See Fig 1 . If digital TR sensor PIDs are not as specified or change during wiggle and tap test, go to next step. If digital TR sensor PID specifications are okay, digital TR sensor system is okay. Diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  or SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (MECHANICAL)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Disconnect TR sensor connector. Install digital TR Sensor "E" Cable (007-00111) and transmission tester to TR sensor. See Fig 2 . Install TR sensor overlay onto transmission tester. Perform TR sensor test as instructed on overlay. TR sensor "E" cable status lights should correspond with gear position. If status lights operate as specified, TR sensor is okay. Go to next step. If status lights do not operate as specified, replace and adjust TR sensor. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connector. Inspect connector for damage, pushed out terminals, loose wires, missing or damaged seals, or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Disconnect digital TR sensor connector. Install breakout box to PCM connector, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between specified terminals. See TR SENSOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY CHECK  table. See Fig 3 . If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect all components. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  9. Using DVOM, measure resistance between specified terminals. See TR SENSOR CIRCUIT SHORT CIRCUIT CHECK  table. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair short circuit. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
    TR SENSOR CIRCUIT SHORT CIRCUIT CHECK

    (1) Measure between specified PCM terminal and breakout box terminals No. 51, 71, 76, 77, 91, 97, 103 and ground.
  10. Using DVOM, measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 3 or 34 (TR1), 49 (TR2), 50 (TR4) and 64 (TR3). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms between any circuit, replace PCM. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less between any circuit, repair shorts on circuits having 10 k/ohms or less between other TR/PCM input signal circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect all components. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  11. Install transmission tester and TR sensor "E" cable to TR sensor. Install digital TR sensor overlay on transmission tester. Perform SWITCH test for all gear positions as instructed on TR sensor overlay. If status light illuminates Red, TR sensor is okay. For starting system concerns, diagnose starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. For back-up light concerns, see BACK-UP LIGHTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If status light does not illuminate Red, replace and adjust TR sensor. Erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
