- Position the vehicle on a hoist. Place in NEUTRAL.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Remove the fluid level indicator and the fluid tube retaining bracket bolt.
- Mark the rear driveshaft flange and remove the bolts.
- Remove the center driveshaft bolts.
- Mark the driveshaft flange and the parking brake and remove the bolts for the driveshaft. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the parking brake linkage.
- Remove the return spring.
- Remove the clip.
- Remove the pin.
- Remove the cable from the lever.
- Remove the parking cable from the housing.
- Remove the bolt from the LH heat shield.
- Remove the two bolts for the LH heat shield and position the heat shield aside.
- Remove the bolt from the RH heat shield.
- Remove the two bolts for the RH heat shield and position the heat shield aside.
- Disconnect the digital TR sensor electrical connector and remove the wire harness from the shift cable bracket.
- Remove the wire harness from the shift cable bracket.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever and remove the shift cable and bracket from the transmission.
- Remove the bolt for the shift cable bracket and position it aside.
- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTERS - EXCEPT DIESEL and STARTERS - DIESEL .
- Remove the bolts and the flexplate shield.
- Remove the torque converter access cover.
- Remove and discard the four torque converter nuts.
- Remove the five bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.
- Remove and discard the six torque converter nuts.
- Install a suitable transmission jack.
- Remove the LH and RH crossmember nuts.
- Remove the rear transmission support crossmember nuts.
- Remove the rear transmission support.
- Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
- Disconnect the transmission solenoid body harness connector.
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
- Remove the bolts from the LH side of the transmission.
DIESEL ENGINES
- Remove the bolt from the RH side of the transmission fill tube bracket and position the fill tube out of the way.
- Remove the remaining transmission bolts from the RH side of the transmission.
- Lower the transmission from the vehicle.
- Remove the bolts and the rear parking brake from the back of the transmission.
NOTE:
When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this condition is temporary and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
