Test C: Torque Converter Clutch Electrical Circuit

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-IV systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
  1. Ensure transmission harness connector is in acceptable condition and fully seated in solenoid body connector. Repair as necessary. Install NGS tester to DLC. Perform KEY-ON-ENGINE-OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST until continuous memory code(s) have been displayed. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE (OTM), select ALL ON and press START to activate outputs. If vehicle enters OTM, remain in OTM and go to next step. If vehicle will not enter OTM, see SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Disconnect transmission 12-pin harness connector. Inspect condition of connector. Repair as needed. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transmission harness connector VPWR terminal No. 1, and connect negative lead to TCC terminal No. 4. See Figure. Set DVOM to 20-volt scale. Press START then STOP to cycle solenoid output on and off. If voltage changes to battery voltage, go to step  6. If voltage does not change or is low, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 54 and transmission harness connector terminal No. 4. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminals No. 71 and 97 and transmission harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure. If each resistance reading less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Reconnect all connectors. Disconnect breakout box. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  4. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 54 and breakout box terminals No. 71 and 97. See Figure. If each resistance reading is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit. Disconnect breakout box. Reconnect all connectors. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 54 and breakout box terminals No. 51, 76, 77, 91, 103, and ground. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistances are 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit(s). Disconnect breakout box. Reconnect all connectors. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  6. Connect transmission tester to transmission connector. Perform SOLENOID VOLTAGE test. See tester manufacturer's instructions. If solenoid activates (LED Green), go to next step. If LED does not light (solenoid shorted to ground or open circuit), or indicates short to battery voltage (LED Red), go to step  8.
  7. Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Perform DYNAMIC TESTING - ENGINE ON test. See tester manufacturer's instructions. If TCC solenoid activates (LED Green) and engine RPM decreases when operated with tester, replace PCM. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTCs are still present, see NO TCC ENGAGEMENT , TCC ALWAYS ENGAGED  or TCC CYCLING OR SHUDDERING  in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING . If engine RPM does not decrease when operated by tester, go to next step.
  8. Set tester Bench/Drive switch to BENCH MODE. Set Select Switch on tester to OHMS CHECK. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to transmission tester TCC solenoid terminal and positive lead to VPWR terminal. Measure and record resistance. Resistance should be 20-30 ohms for gasoline vehicles and 10-20 ohms for diesel vehicles. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace solenoid body assembly. Erase all DTCs. Road test vehicle. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  9. NOTE: The following test should be performed with a digital ohmmeter or low current tester (less than 200 milliamps).
  10. Check continuity between BAT (-) tester terminal and both TCC solenoid terminals. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. Erase all DTCs. Road test vehicle. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If continuity does not exist, see NO TCC ENGAGEMENT , TCC ALWAYS ENGAGED  or TCC CYCLING OR SHUDDERING  in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .
