Section 729 (Engine - 6.0L Diesel - F250-F550 Super Duty): Installation: Engine: Installation

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Raise the engine high enough to clear the No. 1 crossmember, then position the engine into the vehicle.
- Align the torque converter studs with the holes in the engine flywheel, then lower the engine onto the engine mount towers.
- Lower the engine onto the engine mount towers.
- Remove the Heavy Duty Floor Crane and the Diesel Engine Lifting Bracket.
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Install the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.
- Install the new torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts.
- Install the flywheel housing cover.
- Install the LH and RH side engine mount retaining nuts.
- Remove the engine lifting eye from the right side cylinder head.
- Install the manufacturer's lifting bracket.
- Remove the two engine lift adapters.
- Install the transmission cooler tube bracket and nut.
- Install the left rear valve cover stud.
- Position the turbocharger adapter pipe.
- Loosely install the bolts for the turbocharger adapter pipe.
- Install the starter if needed.
- Connect the starter wiring and install the solenoid cap.
- Connect the block heater electrical connector.
- Connect the ground strap on the right head and install the bolt.
- Install the automatic transmission fluid indicator and tube.
- Position the engine wiring harness back. Connect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and wiring retainers.
- Position the A/C accumulator line and install the nut.
- Install the A/C compressor.
- Connect the A/C high pressure switch and the clutch electrical connectors.
- Connect the RH glow plug electrical connector.
- Install the nuts and the glow plug controller.
- Connect the glow plug module electrical connectors.
- Connect the wiring retainers to the studs.
- Connect the ground cable and the ground stud.
- Install the battery cable bracket and the nut, and install the RH standoff for the stator.
- Position the power steering pump and install the lower bolts, and install the LH standoff for the stator.
- Install the power steering pump upper bolts.
- Connect the fuel lines and install the clips. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
- Install the intake manifold gaskets.
- Install the intake manifold and loosely install the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts in the following sequence.
- Loosely install the bolts. Tighten bolts to 9-16 to 11 N.m (8 lb-ft).
- Tighten all bolts to 11 N.m (8 lb-ft) in the sequence shown.
- Install the gasket and loosely install the EGR cooler V-clamp.
- Slide the EGR cooler hose up and rotate flat to lock.
- Install the turbocharger heat shield and the nuts.
- Install the fuel line.
- Install new sealing washers.
- Install the fuel line.
- Install the banjo fitting and the bolt.
- Install the oil filter return tube and bolt.
- On new oil filter return tubes, tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
- On used oil filter return tubes, tighten to 3 N.m (27 lb-in).
- Install the oil filter and the four bolts.
- Connect the fuel line fittings.
- Position the ground wire and install the retaining nut. Connect the eight fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Position the engine wiring harness and connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the retaining clip and exhaust backpressure sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the wiring retainer and the IAT sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the water temperature sensor and the pin-type retainer.
- Connect the TP sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the TP control module electrical connector, if equipped.
- Connect the oil temperature sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the EGR valve electrical connector.
- Connect the wiring retainer, injector pressure regulator and ICP sensor electrical connectors.
- Connect the 12-pin and 8-pin electrical connectors.
- Connect the PCM electrical connector.
- Connect the LH glow plug connector and attach the wire retainer.
- Connect the engine coolant vent hose and clamp.
- Connect the MAP sensor hose.
- Install the heater hose tube and bolts.
- Position the turbocharger outlet pipe.
- Install the bolts and the turbocharger pedestal.
- Install the turbocharger and the turbocharger drain.
- Install the turbocharger.
- Apply clean engine oil on the new O-rings before installation drain.
- Tilt the turbocharger and install the turbocharger drain tube.
- Install the turbocharger rear mounting bolt.
- Install the turbocharger front mounting bolts.
- Install the turbocharger inlet Marmon clamp.
- Position the clamp and tighten to specification.
- Install the turbocharger exhaust Marmon clamp.
- Install the oil feed tube.
- Position the wire retainer and install the bolt.
- Prelubricate the oil inlet hole of the turbocharger assembly with clean engine oil and spin the compressor wheel several times to coat the bearing with oil.
- Position the oil feed tube and install the bolts.
- Install a new gasket.
- Connect the variable gate turbocharger solenoid electrical connector.
- Position the wiring harness and connect the pushpins.
- Install the pushpins.
- Install the fuel injection control module mounting bracket.
- Connect the fuel injection control module electrical connectors.
- Install the fuel injection control module.
- Install the control module bolts.
- Install the module-to-intake tube bracket.
- Install the turbocharger intake tube and the bolts.
- Tighten the clamp at the turbocharger.
- Install the generator and the three bolts.
- Connect the generator B+ wire land electrical connector and position the boot back.
- Install the accessory drive belt.
- Install the upper radiator hose.
- Install the lower radiator hose and clamp.
- Connect the heater hose at the coolant pump.
- Install the bolts and the degas bottle.
- Connect the degas bottle supply hose.
- Connect the engine vent hose and radiator overflow hose.
- Install the bolts and the battery tray.
- Install the LH battery.CAUTION: Be sure the battery cover is reinstalled to avoid premature battery failure.
- Install the bolt and the battery hold-down clamp.
- Install the battery cover.
- Install the transmission oil cooler.
- Connect the transmission cooler hoses.
- Position and install the power steering cooler and bolts.
- Install the bumper.
- Install the front bolts (two on each side).
- Install the rear supporting bolts (one on each side).
- Install the radiator support bracket retaining bolts.
- Connect the left side battery cable to the radiator grille support.
- Position the cable back and tighten the nut.
- Install the radiator grille opening panel reinforcement and retaining bolts.
- Install the three air deflector pin-type retainers and the air temperature sensor.
- Install the air deflector pushpins to the left rear air deflector.
- Install the air deflector pushpins to the right rear air deflector.
- Install the left side air deflector pushpin and hood latch cable clip.
- Place in the A/C condenser core.
- Install new O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil.
- Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
- Install the RH and LH A/C condenser core mounting brackets.
- Position and install the hood latch.
- Connect the A/C condenser core inlet and outlet lines.
- Install the air deflector.
- Install the radiator grille.
- Connect the lower clips on the radiator grille.
- Install the screws.
- Install the parking lamp assemblies. For additional information, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING .
- Install the charge air cooler.
- Install the charge air cooler.
- Install the two studs.
- Install the wire retainers.
- Install the inlet and outlet ducts to the charge air cooler and tighten the clamps.
- Install the stator and the stator bolts.
- Install the cooling fan.
- Using the special tool, tighten the cooling fan and clutch.
- Install the radiator assembly.
- Install the radiator support brackets.
- Connect the transmission cooler tubes.
- Connect the lower radiator hose.
- Make sure the exhaust inlet pipe is correctly aligned to the exhaust manifolds. Using hand tools, alternately tighten the nuts to draw the pipe to the exhaust manifold. There should be a equal gap spacing between the pipe flange and the exhaust manifold flange at both the top and bottom bolts.
- Alternately tighten the exhaust inlet pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts to specification.
- Install the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
- Connect the upper radiator hose and the radiator overflow hose.
- Install the charge air cooler-to-engine tube.
- Install the turbocharger-to-charge air cooler tube.
- Install the nine pin-type retainers and remove the sight shield.
- Install the clutch assembly. For additional information, refer to CLUTCH .
- Install the transmission. For additional information, refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - ZF 6 SPEED .
- Connect the LH and RH battery cables. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Fill the motor with clean engine oil.
- Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
- Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
- Check and fill the automatic transmission.
- Cycle the key 3 times prior to starting the vehicle to avoid the possibility of air lock in the fuel system.

To aid in installation, make sure the turbocharger Marmon clamp stud is positioned towards the drivers side.
