Section 729 (Engine - 6.0L Diesel - F250-F550 Super Duty): Installation: Engine: Installation

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Raise the engine high enough to clear the No. 1 crossmember, then position the engine into the vehicle.

  3. Vehicles with automatic transmission 

  4. Align the torque converter studs with the holes in the engine flywheel, then lower the engine onto the engine mount towers.
  5. Vehicles with manual transmission 

  6. Lower the engine onto the engine mount towers.
  7. All vehicles 

  8. Remove the Heavy Duty Floor Crane and the Diesel Engine Lifting Bracket.
  9. Vehicles with automatic transmission 

  10. Remove the transmission jack.
  11. Install the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.

  12. Install the new torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts.

  13. Install the flywheel housing cover.

  15. Install the LH and RH side engine mount retaining nuts.
  16. Remove the engine lifting eye from the right side cylinder head.

  17. Install the manufacturer's lifting bracket.

  23. Position the turbocharger adapter pipe.

    NOTE: Use a half-moon wrench to aid in accessing the fasteners.
    NOTE: Apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads prior to installing the bolts.

  25. Loosely install the bolts for the turbocharger adapter pipe.
  26. Install the starter if needed.

  27. Connect the starter wiring and install the solenoid cap.

  33. Position the engine wiring harness back. Connect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and wiring retainers.

  35. Position the A/C accumulator line and install the nut.

  48. Position the power steering pump and install the lower bolts, and install the LH standoff for the stator.

  52. Install the intake manifold gaskets.
  53. Install the intake manifold and loosely install the bolts.
  54. Tighten the bolts in the following sequence.
    1. Loosely install the bolts. Tighten bolts to 9-16 to 11 N.m (8 lb-ft).
    2. Tighten all bolts to 11 N.m (8 lb-ft) in the sequence shown.

  55. NOTE: Do not tighten the clamp at this time.

  56. Install the gasket and loosely install the EGR cooler V-clamp.
  57. Slide the EGR cooler hose up and rotate flat to lock.

  58. Install the turbocharger heat shield and the nuts.

  59. Install the fuel line.
    • Install new sealing washers.
    • Install the fuel line.
    • Install the banjo fitting and the bolt.

  60. Install the oil filter return tube and bolt.
    • On new oil filter return tubes, tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
    • On used oil filter return tubes, tighten to 3 N.m (27 lb-in).

    • Apply clean engine oil on the new O-rings before installation drain.
    • Tilt the turbocharger and install the turbocharger drain tube.

  93. Prelubricate the oil inlet hole of the turbocharger assembly with clean engine oil and spin the compressor wheel several times to coat the bearing with oil.
  94. Position the oil feed tube and install the bolts.
    • Install a new gasket.

  129. Place in the A/C condenser core.
    • Install new O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil.
    • Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .

  137. Install the charge air cooler.
    • Install the charge air cooler.
    • Install the two studs.
    • Install the wire retainers.

  139. Install the inlet and outlet ducts to the charge air cooler and tighten the clamps.
  140. Install the stator and the stator bolts.

  141. Install the cooling fan.
  142. NOTE: Use a hole in the fan hub to prevent the fan from turning.

  143. Using the special tool, tighten the cooling fan and clutch.
  144. Install the radiator assembly.

  149. Make sure the exhaust inlet pipe is correctly aligned to the exhaust manifolds. Using hand tools, alternately tighten the nuts to draw the pipe to the exhaust manifold. There should be a equal gap spacing between the pipe flange and the exhaust manifold flange at both the top and bottom bolts.

  151. Alternately tighten the exhaust inlet pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts to specification.
  152. Install the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  153. Connect the upper radiator hose and the radiator overflow hose.

  169. Check and fill the automatic transmission.

  171. Cycle the key 3 times prior to starting the vehicle to avoid the possibility of air lock in the fuel system.
