Transmission Range Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

TCM monitors a series of step down resistors in Transmission Range (TR) sensor that act as a voltage divider. Voltage signal corresponds with position of transaxle selector lever. TR sensor also contains neutral/start and back-up circuits. Malfunction of TR sensor may cause harsh engagements and firm shift feel. Improper shifting or shift selection and no engine cranking may also result.
