Test KH: WASTEGATE Control Solenoid (Excursion & F250-550): Testing

NOTE: Proceed to DTC testing steps listed in FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION  table of fault code setting condition.
FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION

Fault Code KOEO KOER Continuous Memory
P1249      KH6
    NOTE: Perform test steps 1)  -5)  when directed here from RUNS ROUGH, MISSES, BUCKS OR JERKS, HESITATION, STUMBLES, SURGES (ON ACCELERATION OR CRUISE), LACK OR LOSS OF POWER, OR POOR FUEL ECONOMY symptom under SYMPTOMS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - EEC-V - DIESEL article.

  1. 1) Boost Pressure Test
    Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn A/C off. Using scan tool, access and monitor Manifold Gauge Pressure (MGP) PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle. Observe PID reading while performing several accelerations from 1500-3000 RPM to determine turbo boost. Test works best by road testing vehicle up a hill or with vehicle fully loaded. With accelerator at wide open throttle, note highest boost reading while accelerating through 2500-3000 RPM range. MGP PID reading will level out after 3000 RPM and should be 16 psi (110 kPa) or more. If MGP PID reading is more than minimum specification, go to next step. If MGP PID reading is less than minimum specification, return to RUNS ROUGH, MISSES, BUCKS OR JERKS, HESITATION, STUMBLES, SURGES (ON ACCELERATION OR CRUISE), LACK OR LOSS OF POWER, OR POOR FUEL ECONOMY symptom under SYMPTOMS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - EEC-V - DIESEL article to complete diagnosis.
  2. NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  3. 2) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P1690: Check For Power To WGC Solenoid
    DTC P1690 indicates PCM has detected a failure on WGC circuit. Possible causes are:
    • Blown Fuse
    • VPWR Circuit Open
    • WGC Circuit Open Or Shorted To Ground
    • Faulty WGC Solenoid
    • Faulty PCM

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect WGC solenoid. Solenoid is located on turbocharger wastegate. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and WGC solenoid harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Green wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, check for open in VPWR circuit. Check fuse No. 64 (30-amp) in central junction box. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in VPWR circuit. Repair circuit and replace fuse as necessary. If fuse is okay, repair open in Red/Light Green wire between central junction box and WGC solenoid. Clear DTCs and retest.

  4. 3) Check WGC Circuit For Open

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of White/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at WGC solenoid harness connector and test pin No. 47 at breakout box. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Red wire between PCM and WGC solenoid. Clear DTCs and retest.
  5. 4) Check WGC Circuit For Short To Ground

    Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and WGC solenoid harness connector terminal No. 1 (White/Red wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in White/Red wire between PCM and WGC solenoid. Clear DTCs and retest.
  6. 5) Check WGC Solenoid

    Using DVOM, measure resistance between WGC solenoid terminals. If resistance is 50 ohms or more, replace WGC solenoid. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is less than 50 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.

  8. 6) Continuous Memory DTC P1249: Repeat KOEO Self-Test
    DTC P1249 indicates wastegate steady state failure. Possible causes are:
    • Short To Ground
    • Plugged WGC Vacuum Hose Or Port
    • Faulty WGC Solenoid
    • Faulty WGC Actuator
    • Faulty PCM

    Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. If DTC P1690 is present, go to step  2). If DTC P1690 is not present, go to next step.

  9. 7) Check WGC Vacuum Hose

    Disconnect Red hose from WGC actuator. See Figure. Connect a vacuum pump to end of disconnected Red hose. Apply vacuum. If vacuum does not hold, go to step  9). If vacuum holds, leave vacuum applied and go to next step.
  10. 8) Check Intake Port

    Disconnect Red hose from charge air cooler housing. If vacuum now releases, hose is okay. Clean plugged charge air cooler housing hose port. Clear DTCs and retest. If hose still holds vacuum, replace plugged WGC hose. Clear DTCs and retest.
  11. 9) Check Intercooler Port

    Disconnect Red hose from charge air cooler housing. Connect vacuum pump to intake port and apply vacuum. If port does not hold vacuum, go to next step. If port holds vacuum, clean plugged charge air cooler housing hose port. Clear DTCs and retest.
  12. 10) Check WGC Actuator

    Connect vacuum pump to WGC actuator. Apply vacuum. If actuator does not hold vacuum, actuator diaphragm is faulty. Replace actuator. Clear DTCs and retest. If actuator holds vacuum, check for sticking WGC actuator linkage. Repair or replace as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest.
