Test C: Transmission Range Sensor

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 13 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, 2003 Mazda B2300, 2002 Mazda B4000, and 2002 Mazda B3000. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
NOTE: DTCs P0705 and P0708 cannot be set by an incorrectly adjusted digital TR sensor.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Perform RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If only DTCs P0705 and P0708 are present, go to step  4. If any other DTCs, or no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  2. With ignition switch in OFF position and gearshift lever in "P" position, ensure TR sensor harness connector is fully seated and in good condition. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position and apply parking brake. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Disconnect shift cable/linkage from transmission manual lever. Install TR sensor alignment tool and ensure sensor is aligned correctly. TR sensor alignment tool will not seat fully if sensor is not aligned. If TR sensor is aligned correctly, go to next step. If TR sensor is not adjusted correctly, adjust TR sensor and clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Place gearshift lever in "P" position and repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  3. Place transmission manual lever in "OD" position. Place gearshift lever in "OD" position. Ensure shift cable/linkage can be reconnected to transmission manual lever. Adjust shift cable/linkage as necessary and go to next step.
  4. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position and gearshift lever is in "P" position. Disconnect TR sensor connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. If connector is damaged, repair as necessary and clear DTCs. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) . If diagnostic test is being performed because of DTC, go to next step. If diagnostic test is being performed because of a no-start condition, back-up light failure or 4X4 low failure condition, go to step  10.
  5. NOTE: If PID TR_D changes during following step, concern may be intermittent.

  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Reconnect TR sensor connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select TR sensor PIDs TR, TR_D and TR_V. Monitor NGS tester while moving gearshift lever into each gear position. Stop at each position and wiggle TR sensor harness connector, tap lightly on TR sensor case and/or drive vehicle. Repeat for each gear position and compare values with specifications. See Fig 1. If digital TR sensor PIDs are not as specified or change during wiggle and tap test, go to next step. If digital TR sensor PIDs are as specified, digital TR sensor system is okay. See appropriate symptom in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  7. Disconnect digital TR sensor connector. Connect TR-E cable (007-00111) to transmission tester. Connect TR-E cable to digital TR sensor. Place digital TR sensor Overlay (007-00131) onto transmission tester. See Fig 2. Perform TR sensor test as instructed on digital TR sensor overlay. If digital TR status lights match each selected gear position, TR sensor is okay. Go to next step. If digital TR status lights do not match each selected gear position, replace and adjust TR sensor. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector and inspect for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box. Disconnect digital TR sensor connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between specified breakout box terminal and TR sensor connector terminal. See PCM HARNESS OPEN CIRCUIT CHECK  table. See Figure. If all resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance measurement is 5 ohms or more, repair open in affected circuit. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .

  9. Measure and record resistance between specified breakout box terminals. See PCM HARNESS SHORT CIRCUIT CHECK  table. If all resistance measurements are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance measurement is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in affected circuit. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
    PCM HARNESS SHORT CIRCUIT CHECK (1)

    (1) Measure between specified breakout box terminals.
  10. Using DVOM, measure resistance between specified breakout box terminals. See TR SENSOR & PCM SHORT CIRCUIT CHECK  table. If any resistance measurement is more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM and reconnect all connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) . If all resistance measurements are 10 k/ohms or less, repair short between suspect TR sensor and PCM circuit. Reconnect PCM and TR sensor connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .

  11. Connect TR-E Cable (007-00111) to transmission tester and TR sensor. Place digital TR sensor Overlay (007-00131) onto transmission tester. See Fig 2. Perform TR sensor test as instructed on digital TR sensor overlay. If digital TR status lights do not match each selected gear position, replace and adjust TR sensor. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  12. If digital TR status lights match each selected gear position, TR sensor is okay. For a no-crank concern, see appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. For a back-up light concern, see BACK-UP LIGHTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. For a 4X4 low concern, go to TEST TG: 4WD LOW INDICATOR CIRCUITS (EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER)  or TEST TG: 4WD LOW INDICATOR CIRCUITS (EXCEPT EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER)  , or see appropriate symptom under SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in BORG-WARNER 44-05 DIAGNOSIS article in TRANSFER CASES.
