Removal and Installation

NOTE: New O-ring seals must be installed any time the lines are disconnected from the steering gear.
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  2. Disengage the steering coupling shield from the line fitting and slide upward on the steering shaft.

  3. Remove the pinch bolt.
    • Turn the steering wheel as necessary to access the bolt.
    • Make sure the steering column is locked.

  4. CAUTION: During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.

  5. Disconnect the lines.
    • Discard the O-ring seals.
  6. Raise the vehicle. Refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  7. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
    • Discard the cotter pin.

  8. Using the special tool, disconnect the drag link.

  9. Remove the bolts, washers and the steering gear.

  10. Remove the nut.

  11. Using the special tool, remove the steering gear sector shaft arm.

  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Install a new high pressure hose O-ring seal (N811029-S) and a new return hose O-ring seal (N803257-S).
  13. Fill and leak check the system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
