Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford RV Cutaway, 2004 Ford Econoline, 2004 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2004 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The fan, fan clutch and shroud must be removed and installed together due to insufficient clearance to remove them separately.

    ALL VEHICLES 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  4. Disconnect the radiator upper hose from the radiator. Position the radiator hose aside.
  5. Disconnect the overflow hose from the radiator.

    6. CAUTION: The coolant hose must be mounted in the lower hole and power steering hose in the upper hole or damage to the hoses can occur.

  6. Disconnect the coolant degas bottle and power steering hose from the shroud.

    7. VEHICLES WITH 4.6L and 5.4L ENGINE 

    CAUTION: The clutch assembly nut has a right-hand thread and must be rotated counterclockwise to remove it.

  7. Using the special tools, loosen the fan clutch.

    8. VEHICLES WITH 6.8L ENGINE 

    CAUTION: The clutch assembly nut has a right-hand thread and must be rotated counterclockwise to remove it.

  8. Using the special tools, loosen the fan clutch.

    9. ALL VEHICLES 

  9. Carefully rotate the fan and fan clutch assembly counterclockwise until the assembly is free from the coolant pump. Place the fan and fan clutch into the shroud opening.
  10. Disconnect the lower radiator hose retaining clamp from the shroud.

  11. If equipped, disconnect the underbody splash shield from the shroud.

    12. CAUTION: Use extreme care when removing or installing the fan, fan clutch and shroud. Failure to do so will cause damage to the radiator.

  12. Remove the mounting bolts and the fan, fan clutch and shroud.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • If necessary, install new appropriately sized worm drive-type clamps.
  14. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
