Test F: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Ranger and 2002 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Inspect all generator, power distribution and battery connections for looseness, corrosion, and loose or bent terminals. If all connections are okay, go to next step. If a problem exists, repair as necessary.
  2. Start engine and let idle. Check central junction box fuse No. 11 (7.5-amp) for looseness. Wiggling fuse and note warning indicator operation. If warning indicator does not flicker, go to next step. If warning indicator flickers, repair loose connection as necessary.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using a fused (15-amp) jumper wire connected to positive battery terminal, backprobe generator harness connector terminal No. "A" (Yellow/White wire). See Figure. Start engine and let idle. Note warning indicator operation. If warning indicator does not flicker, repair loose connections in circuit between generator and Brown fusible link "C". On 3.0L models, if warning indicator flickers, go to next step. On 2.3L and 4.0L models, if warning indicator flickers, replace generator.
  4. Turn ignition off. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
  5. Remove generator from vehicle. Measure resistance between voltage regulator "F" terminal screw on back of generator and generator 3-pin connector terminal "A" (component side). See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace generator.
  6. Remove voltage regulator and brush holder. Measure resistance between generator housing and each generator slip ring. See Fig 2. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more between both slip rings and housing, replace voltage regulator. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms between either slip ring and housing, replace generator.
