Pinpoint Test A: The Engine Does Not Crank Or Relay Clicks

  1. A1 CHECK THE BATTERY 

    Yes  GO to A2.

    No  CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as required. TEST the system for normal operation.

  2. A2 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE 
    • Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection at the cylinder block.
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A3.

    No  INSTALL a new battery ground cable. TEST the system for normal operation.

  3. A3 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND 
    • Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the starter motor case.
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A4.

    No  CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and make sure the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.

  4. A4 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE STARTER MOTOR 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the voltage at the starter motor B terminal.
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A5

    No  INSTALL a new positive battery cable. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. A5 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR 
    • Connect one end of a jumper wire to the B terminal of the starter motor and momentarily connect the other end to the starter solenoid S terminal.
    • Does the starter motor engage and the engine crank? 

    Yes  GO to A6.

    No  INSTALL a new starter motor. TEST the system for normal operation.

  6. A6 CHECK START INPUT TO THE STARTER MOTOR 
    • Disconnect: Starter S Connector.
    • Hold the ignition switch in the START position.
    • Measure the voltage at the starter motor solenoid S connector.
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  CLEAN the starter solenoid S terminal and connector. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  GO to A7.

  7. A7 CHECK THE START INPUT TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Starter Relay.
    • Hold the ignition switch in the START position.
    • Measure the voltage at the starter relay connector C1017 pin 2, circuit 33 (WH/PK).
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A8

    No  GO to  A13.

  8. A8 CHECK THE BATTERY SUPPLY TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the voltage at the starter relay connector C1017 pin 1, circuit 1050 (LG/VT).
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A9

    No  REPAIR the open in circuit 37 (YE). TEST the system for normal operation.

  9. A9 CHECK CIRCUIT 113 (YE/LB) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Starter S Connector.
    • Measure the resistance between the starter relay connector C1017 pin 5, circuit 113 (YE/LB) and ground.

    • Is the resistance reading less than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  REPAIR circuit 113 (YE/LB) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  GO to A10.

  10. A10 CHECK CIRCUIT 113 (YE/LB) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance of circuit 113 (YE/LB) between the starter relay connector pin 5 and the starter S connector.
    • Is the resistance reading less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to A11.

    No  REPAIR circuit 113 (YE/LB) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  11. A11 CHECK THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) 
    • Connect: Starter Relay.
    • Connect: Starter S Terminal.
    • Disconnect: PATS C2007.
    • Connect a jumper wire between the PATS module connector C2007 pin 1, circuit 936 (DG/WH) and ground.
    • Key in START position.
    • Did the engine crank? 

    Yes  Refer to ANTI-THEFT to diagnose the passive anti-theft system concern.

    No  GO to A12.

  12. A12 CHECK CIRCUIT 33 (WH/PK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Starter Relay.
    • Measure the resistance of circuit 33 (WH/PK) between the starter relay connector C1017 pin 2 and the PATS module connector C2007 pin 1 circuit 936 (DG/WH).
    • Is the resistance reading less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new starter relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  REPAIR circuit 33 (WH/PK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  13. A13 CHECK FUSE 29 (10A) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Fuse 29 (10A).
    • Check fuse: Fuse 29 (10A).
    • Is fuse 29 (10A) OK? 

    Yes  GO to A14.

    No  GO to  A20.

  14. A14 CHECK THE INPUT TO FUSE 29 (10A) 
    • Hold the ignition switch to the START position.
    • Measure the voltage at the input cavity of fuse 29 (10A).
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  A18.

    No  GO to A15.

  15. A15 CHECK THE SUPPLY TO THE IGNITION SWITCH 
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
    • Measure the voltage at the ignition switch connector pin C250, circuit 37 (YE).
    • Is the voltage reading greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to A16.

    No  REPAIR circuit 37 (YE) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  16. A16 CHECK CIRCUIT 50 (RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance of circuit 50 (RD) between the ignition switch connector C250 pin 7 and the input cavity of fuse 29 (10A).
    • Is the resistance reading less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to A17.

    No  REPAIR circuit 50 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  17. A17 CHECK CIRCUIT 50 (RD) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between the ignition switch connector C250 pin 7 circuit 50 (RD) and ground.
    • Is the resistance reading less than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  REPAIR circuit 50 (RD) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  INSTALL a new ignition switch. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM TEST the system for normal operation.

  18. A18 CHECK CIRCUIT 32 (RD/LB) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167.
    • Measure the resistance between the digital TR sensor connector C167 pin 12 circuit 32 (RD/LB) and the fuse junction panel fuse 29 output cavity.
    • Is the resistance reading less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to A19.

    No  REPAIR circuit 32 (RD/LB) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  19. A19 CHECK CIRCUIT 33 (WH/PK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance of circuit 33 (WH/PK) between the starter relay connector C1017 pin 2 and the digital TR sensor connector C250 pin 10.
    • Is the resistance reading less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  CHECK the digital TR sensor adjustment. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R55S . If the digital TR sensor is adjusted correctly, INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  REPAIR circuit 33 (WH/PK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  20. A20 CHECK FOR A SHORTED SYSTEM 
    • Disconnect: Starter Relay.
    • Measure the resistance between the fuse junction panel fuse 29 output cavity, connector C1017 pin 2 circuit 33 (WH/PK) and ground.
    • Is the resistance reading greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  INSPECT all circuits and connections. CHECK for chafed wires or an intermittent connection to ground. INSTALL a new fuse 29 (10A). TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  GO to A21.

  21. A21 CHECK CIRCUIT 33 (WH/PK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C209.
    • Disconnect: Starter Relay.
    • Measure the resistance between the fuse junction panel fuse 29 output cavity, circuit 33 (WH/PK) and ground.
    • Is the resistance reading greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to A22.

    No  REPAIR circuit 329 (WH/PK) for short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

  22. A22 CHECK CIRCUIT 33 (WH/PK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between the digital TR sensor connector C167 pin 10, circuit 33 (WH/PK) and ground.
    • Is the resistance reading greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  CHECK the digital TR sensor adjustment. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R55S . If the digital TR sensor is adjusted correctly, INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  REPAIR circuit 33 (WH/PK) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
