Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and 2004 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER LH  and VALVE COVER RH .
  2. Remove the fuel supply manifold. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR, FUEL CHARGING, STARTING AND ENGINE ELECTRONICS - 4.0L SOHC .
  3. Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to ENGINE FRONT COVER .
  4. Remove the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  5. Remove all of the roller followers. For additional information, refer to CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWER AND HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTER .
  6. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.
  7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center.
  8. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  10. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.
  11. Retime the LH and RH camshafts. For additional information, refer to Timing Drive Components
