Pinpoint Test N: DTC B2734, B2736, B2737, B2738, B2740 - Pedal Travel Sensor Fault: Overview

CAUTION: Use the flex probe kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
  1. N1 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C155.
    • Disconnect: Brake Pedal Travel Sensor C148.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the brake pedal travel sensor connector, harness side and ground as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      Brake Pedal Travel Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit
      C148-1 3010 (TN)
      C148-2 3011 (BK/OG)
      C148-3 3012 (WH)

    • Is any voltage present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No 

    GO to N2.

  2. N2 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the brake pedal travel sensor connector, harness side and ground as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      Brake Pedal Travel Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit
      C148-1 3010 (TN)
      C148-2 3011 (BK/OG)
      C148-3 3012 (WH)

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes 

    GO to N3.

    No 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  3. N3 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT 
    • Measure the resistance between the brake pedal travel sensor connector pins, harness side as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      Brake Pedal Travel Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit
      C148-1 3010 (TN)
      C148-2 3011 (BK/OG)
      C148-3 3012 (WH)

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes 

    GO to N4.

    No 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. N4 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module connector, harness side and the brake pedal travel sensor connector, harness side as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      ABS Module Connector-Pin Brake Pedal Travel Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit
      C155-26 C148-1 3010 (TN)
      C155-24 C148-2 3011 (BK/OG)
      C155-40 C148-3 3012 (WH)

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes 

    GO to N5.

    No 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. N5 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT 
    • Connect: ABS Module C155.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the brake pedal travel sensor C147-3, circuit 3601 (WH/RD), harness side, and the brake pedal travel sensor C147-1, circuit 3603 (RD), harness side.

    • Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 

    Yes 

    GO to N6.

    No 

    GO to  N7.

  6. N6 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Connect: Brake Pedal Travel Sensor C147.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C155.
    • Remove pin 20, circuit 3600 (RD/WH) from the ABS module connector.
    • Connect: ABS Module C155.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the ABS module C155-20, circuit 3600 (RD/WH), harness side and ground, while pressing and releasing the brake pedal.
    • Is the voltage between 0.35 and 0.65 volt with the brake pedal released and between 0.65 and 4.5 volts with the brake pedal pressed? 

    Yes 

    GO to N7.

    No 

    INSTALL a new brake pedal travel sensor. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. REPEAT the self-test.

  7. N7 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes 

    INSTALL a new ABS module. refer to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
