Pinpoint Test Am: The Defrost System Is Inoperative
- AM1 CHECK THE SJB DTCS
- Retrieve the recorded DTC results from the SJB for the continuous and on-demand self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC B1348 or B1349 GO to AM10.
No
GO to AM2.
- AM2 CHECK CIRCUIT 186 (BN/LB) FOR VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost C402b.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- Turn the rear window defrost switch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the rear window defrost C402b, circuit 186 (BN/LB), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
NOTE: The engine speed must be above 400 rpm before the rear window defrost system operates.Yes
GO to AM3.
No
Vehicles with single zone climate control GO to AM4.
Vehicles with dual zone climate control GO to AM8.
- AM3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1205 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Ground C402a.
- Measure the resistance between the rear window defrost ground C402a, circuit 1205 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CHECK the rear window defrost grid. Refer to WINDOW GRID WIRE REPAIR .
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM4 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST INDICATOR
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- Press the rear window defrost switch.
- Is the rear window defrost switch indicator ON?
NOTE: The engine speed must be above 400 rpm before the rear window defrost system will operate.Yes
GO to AM8.
No
GO to AM5.
- AM5 CHECK THE SWITCHED GROUND INPUT TO THE SJB
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b-18, circuit 1426 (PK), harness side and ground.
- Press the rear window defrost switch to ON.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AM16.
No
GO to AM6.
- AM6 CHECK CIRCUIT 1426 (PK) FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY
- Disconnect: Function Selector Switch Assembly C294a.
- Measure for voltage between the SJB C2280b-18, circuit 1426 (PK), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to AM7.
- AM7 CHECK CIRCUIT 1426 (PK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b-18, circuit 1426 (PK), harness side and the function selector switch assembly C294a-10, circuit 1426 (PK), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new function selector switch assembly. Refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM8 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Relay C1099.
- Carry out the ISO relay component test on the rear window defrost relay.
Refer to COMPONENT TESTING for schematic and connector.
- Did the rear window defrost relay pass the component test?
Yes
GO to AM9.
No
INSTALL a new rear window defrost relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM9 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the rear window defrost relay C1099-85, circuit 298 (VT/OG) component side and ground, then between the rear window defrost relay C1099-30, component side and ground.
- Are both voltages greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to AM10.
No
INSTALL a new BEC. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM10 CHECK REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Relay C1099.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the rear window defrost relay C1099-86, circuit 1389 (WH) and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
GO to AM11.
No
GO to AM12.
- AM11 CHECK THE BEC FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: BEC C1035a.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the rear window defrost relay C1099-86, circuit 1389 (WH) and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
INSTALL a new BEC. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM12 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Measure the resistance between the rear window defrost relay C1099-86, circuit 1389 (WH) and the SJB C2280c-12, circuit 1389 (WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AM14.
No
GO to AM13.
- AM13 CHECK CIRCUIT 1389 (WH) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: BEC C1035a.
- Measure the resistance between the BEC C1035a-B12, circuit 1389 (WH), component side and the SJB C2280c-12, circuit 1389 (WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new BEC. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM14 CHECK THE FEED CIRCUIT TO THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST
- Measure the resistance between the rear window defrost relay C1099, pin 87 circuit 186 (BN/LB) and the rear window defrost C402b-1, circuit 186 (BN/LB), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AM16.
No
GO to AM15.
- AM15 CHECK CIRCUIT 186 (BN/LB) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: BEC C1035a.
- Measure the resistance between the BEC C1035a-A12, circuit 186 (BN/LB), component side and the rear window defrost C402b-1, circuit 186 (BN/LB), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new BEC. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- AM16 CHECK FOR CORRECT MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they are seated correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the SJB self-test.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
