Pinpoint Test C: A Single Illumination Source Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. C1 VERIFY THE CONDITION
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
    • Observe the lighting.
    • Are the illumination sources operating correctly?

    Yes

System is operating correctly at this time.

    No

If the exterior rear view mirror switch, the memory set switch, the driver door lock control switch, and the passenger door lock control switch (fixed backlighting) are inoperative, GO to  C4.

If the variable backlighting sources are inoperative, GO to C2.

  2. C2 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE INOPERATIVE VARIABLE ILLUMINATION SOURCE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Illumination Source.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
    • Measure the voltage between the inoperative illumination source and ground as follows:
MEASURING VOLTAGE BETWEEN INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE AND GROUND

      Component Connector Circuit
      message center switch C253-6 1417 (LG/RD)
      headlamp switch C205-2 1418 (LB/WH)
      overhead console C930-14 1418 (LB/WH)
      overhead console C930-6 1417 (LG/RD)
      traction assist/parking aid switch C2114-9 1417 (LG/RD)
      adjustable pedal switch C2089-3 1417 (LG/RD)
power vent window control switch C2981-4 1417 (LG/RD)
      clock C2016-2 1418 (LB/WH)
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

    Yes

    GO to C3

    No

REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

  3. C3 CHECK THE GROUND TO THE INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE
    • Measure the resistance between the inoperative illumination source and ground as follows:
MEASURING RESISTANCE BETWEEN INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE AND GROUND

      Component Connector Circuit
message center switch C253-3 1205 (BK)
      headlamp switch C205-1 1205 (BK)
      overhead console C930-1 1205 (BK)
      traction assist/parking aid switch C2114-5 1205 (BK)
adjustable pedal switch C2089-2 1205 (BK)
power vent window control switch C2981-8 1205 (BK)
      clock C2016-5 1205 (BK)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes

INSTALL a new component in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No

REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

  4. C4 CHECK FOR POWER AT THE FIXED ILLUMINATION SOURCE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Illumination Source.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the inoperative illumination source and ground as follows:
MEASURE VOLTAGE BETWEEN INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE AND GROUND

      Component Connector Circuit
exterior rear view mirror switch C527-7 1499 (PK/LG)
      memory set switch C9023-3 1499 (PK/LG)
driver door lock control switch C508b-5 1499 (PK/LG)
driver door power window control switch C508a-4 400 (LB/BK)
