Preliminary Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify customer concern by operating system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage of following:
    • Loose, missing or damaged compressor drive belt.
    • Loose or disconnected A/C clutch.
    • Contaminated or burned A/C clutch.
    • Broken or leaking refrigerant lines.
    • Obstructed in-vehicle temperature sensor.
    • Disconnected in-vehicle temperature sensor aspirator hose.
    • Damaged Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC).
    • Damaged coolant temperature sensor.
    • Engine coolant leak.
    • Blown Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse No. F26 (65-amp).
    • Blown Central Junction Box (Central Junction Box (CJB) fuses F33 (20-amp), F36 (7.5-amp), F37 (10-amp), F39 (20-amp), F45 (15-amp), F47 (15-amp), F58 (10-amp) or F59 (7.5-amp).
    • Blower motor inoperative.
    • Compressor inoperative.
    • Disconnected electrical connectors.
    • Engine cooling fan inoperative.
    • Missing or damaged joint connectors.
    • Circuitry open or shorted.
  2. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct cause (if possible) before proceeding. If concern is not visually evident, perform electronic automatic temperature control module self-test. See ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL MODULE SELF-TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If a condition exists but no DTCs are retrieved during self-test, proceed to SYMPTOM TESTS .
