Pinpoint Test E: Poor Quality/No Sound From All Speakers

  1. E1 CHECK FOR AUDIO UNIT OPERATION 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Turn the audio unit on.
    • Does the audio unit display illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E2.
    2. No  : Go To PINPOINT TEST A: THE AUDIO UNIT IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY  .
  2. E2 CHECK THE SPEAKER OPERATION 
    • Carry out the speaker walk-around test.
    • Do all speakers have poor quality/no sound? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E3.
    2. No  : Go To PINPOINT TEST D: POOR QUALITY/NO SOUND FROM ONE OR MORE SPEAKERS (NOT ALL SPEAKERS)  .
  3. E3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1000 (RD/BK) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Audio Unit C290a.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the audio unit C290a pin 3, circuit 100 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 6 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E4.
    2. No  : For TREMOR audio units, GO to  E6 . All others, REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized repair facility. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. E4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1000 (RD/BK) FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE FOURWHEEL DRIVE (4WD) CONTROL MODULE (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) OR THE DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE (DTR) SENSOR (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) DISCONNECTED 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: 4WD Control Module C281a (manual transmission), Digital Transmission Range (DTR) Sensor C167 (automatic transmission).
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the audio unit C290a pin 3, circuit 100 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E5.
    2. No  : For manual transmission, GO to  E10 .

      For automatic transmission, INSTALL a new DTR sensor. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R44E & 5R55E . TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. E5 CHECK CIRCUIT 1000 (RD/BK) FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DISCONNECTED 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the audio unit C290a pin 3, circuit 100 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to  E11 .
  6. E6 CHECK CIRCUIT 828 (VT/LB) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Audio Unit Amplifier C3154a.
    • Measure the voltage between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 1, circuit 828 (VT/LB), harness side and ground; and between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 13, circuit 828 (VT/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E7.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. E7 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 12, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground; and between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 24, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E8.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. E8 CHECK CIRCUIT 147 (VT/LB) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Measure the voltage between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 22, circuit 147 (VT/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 4.1 volts? 
    1. Yes  : REMOVE the audio unit amplifier and SEND it to an authorized repair facility. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E9
  9. E9 CHECK CIRCUIT 147 (VT/LB) FOR OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Turn the audio unit off.
    • Disconnect: Audio Unit C290b.
    • Measure the resistance between the audio unit C290b pin 8, circuit 147 (VT/LB), harness side and the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 22, circuit 147 (VT/LB), harness side; and measure the resistance between the audio unit amplifier C3154a pin 22, circuit 147 (VT/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the audio unit and audio unit amplifier, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the audio unit amplifier and ground? 
    1. Yes  : REMOVE the audio unit and SEND it to an authorized repair facility. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. E10 CHECK FOR CORRECT FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) CONTROL MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the 4WD control module connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the 4WD control module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new 4WD control module. REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  11. E11 CHECK FOR CORRECT SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
