Pinpoint Test N: The O/D Off Indicator Is Never/Always On

- N1 CHECK THE OVERDRIVE OPERATION
- Test drive the vehicle and check the operation of the transmission control switch.
- Does the transmission control switch operate correctly?
- Yes
: If the indicator is inoperative, GO to N2.
If the indicator is always on, GO to N4.
- No : REFER to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS to continue diagnosis of the transmission control switch.
- N2 CHECK THE O/D OFF INDICATOR CIRCUIT
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175.
- Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the PCM C175 pin 79, circuit 911 (WH/LG), harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Does the O/D OFF indicator illuminate?
NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.- Yes : GO to N7.
- No : GO to N3.
- N3 CHECK CIRCUIT 911 (WH/LG) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 16, circuit 911 (WH/LG), harness side and the PCM C175 pin 79, circuit 911 (WH/LG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to N6.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- N4 CHECK THE PCM
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175.
- Observe the O/D OFF indicator.
- Does the O/D OFF indicator continue to illuminate?
- Yes : GO to N5.
- No : GO to N7.
- N5 CHECK CIRCUIT 911 (WH/LG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 16, circuit 911 (WH/LG), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
- Yes : GO to N7.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- N6 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- N7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect the PCM connector.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect the PCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
