Removal and Installation

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the oil level indicator tube. For additional information refer to ENGINE 2.3L .
  3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L .
  4. Disconnect the hose from the degas bottle.

  5. Disconnect the heater control hose from the tube portion.

  6. Remove the EGR coolant hose mounting nuts.

  7. Disconnect the hose from the thermostat housing.

  8. Remove the shifter, for manual transmission only. For additional information refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION .
  9. Remove the rear driveshaft. For additional information refer to DRIVESHAFT .
  10. Remove the catalytic converter to muffler bolts.

  11. Remove the bolts and the catalytic converter.

  13. Support transmission with appropriate transmission jack.
  14. Remove the six bolts (three on each side) retaining the crossmember to the frame.

  15. Detach the transmission electrical connector from the crossmember. Remove the transmission mount nuts and crossmember.

  16. Lower the transmission to access EGR coolant hose.
  17. Disconnect the hose from the intake manifold heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) fitting and remove the hose from the vehicle.

  18. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
