Timing Drive Components - Camshaft Timing

  1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  3. Remove the fuel supply manifold. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - 4.0L SOHC .
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING .
  5. Remove the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  6. Remove the roller followers. For additional information, refer to ROLLER FOLLOWERS .
    7. NOTE: You must re-time the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.
  7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC).
    8. NOTE: Late build pulley shown, early build pulley similar.
    NOTE: The special tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block to position the engine at TDC.

  8. Install the special tool.
    9. CAUTION: The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left -hand threaded bolt.
    NOTE: If necessary, use camshaft gear torque adapter (303-565) to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  9. Using the special tool, loosen the RH camshaft sprocket bolt.
    10. NOTE: The camshaft timing slots are off-center.

  10. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools. Install the special tools on the front of the RH cylinder head.
  11. Remove the RH lower splash shield.

  12. Remove the RH camshaft tensioner.

    13. NOTE: Leave the top two special tool clamp bolts loose.

  13. Install the special tools on the rear of the RH cylinder head.
  14. Install the special tool.

    15. CAUTION: The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left -hand threaded bolt.
    NOTE: If necessary, use camshaft gear torque adapter (303-565) to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
  15. Tighten the bolts.
    1. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).
    2. Tighten the camshaft bolt.

  16. Install the RH camshaft tensioner.

  17. Install the RH lower splash shield.

  18. Remove the LH camshaft tensioner.

  19. Install the special tools on the front of the LH cylinder head and tighten the top two clamp bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).

  20. Loosen the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.

  21. Loosen the top two clamp bolts on the special tool to allow the camshaft sprocket to rotate freely.
    22. NOTE: The camshaft timing slots are off-center.

  22. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools. Install the special tools on the rear of the LH cylinder head.
  23. Install the special tool.

  24. Tighten the bolts.
    1. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).
    2. Tighten the camshaft bolt.

  25. Install the LH camshaft tensioner.

  26. Install the roller followers. For additional information, refer to ROLLER FOLLOWERS .
  27. Install the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .

  29. Install the fuel supply manifold. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - 4.0L SOHC .
  30. Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  31. Install the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - RH .
  32. Install the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER LH .
