Pinpoint Test K: The AUTOLAMPS Are Inoperative

  1. K1 CHECK THE HEADLAMPS OPERATION 
    • Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
    • Do the low beams illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to K2.
    2. No  : REFER to HEADLAMPS  to continue diagnostics.
  2. K2 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OUTPUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster headlamp switch status PID while rotating the knob to the autolamps ON position.
    • Does the PID match with the headlamp switch position? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  K6.
    2. No  : GO to K3.
  3. K3 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Carry out the headlamp switch component test.

      Refer to COMPONENT TESTING .

    • Is the headlamp switch OK? 
    1. Yes  : GO to K4.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to HEADLAMP SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. K4 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c-18, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and the headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to K5.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. K5 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220c-18, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to  K11.
  6. K6 CHECK PHOTOCELL INPUT 
    • Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while covering and then illuminating the photocell.
    • Does the PID percentage change with the sensor covered and then illuminated? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  K11.
    2. No  : GO to K7.
  7. K7 CHECK THE PHOTOCELL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Photocell C286.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while connecting and then disconnecting a fused (5A) jumper wire between the photocell C286-2, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and the photocell C286-5, circuit 31-LE42 (BK/OG), harness side.

    • Does the PID percentage change with the jumper wire connected and then disconnected? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new photocell. REFER PHOTOCELL . TEST the system for normal operation
    2. No  : GO to K8.
  8. K8 CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LE42 (BK/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the photocell C286-5, circuit 31 -LE42 (BK/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to K9.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. K9 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE42 (WH/BU) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a-19, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and the photocell C286-2, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to K10.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. K10 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE42 (WH/BU) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a-19, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to K11.
  11. K11 CHECK FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. Refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. REPEAT the self-test.
