Disassembly and Assembly

- Disassemble the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.
- To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.
- Repeat the procedure until all of the valves are removed.
Items 1, 2, 8, and 9: Tappet Shim and Tappet Disassembly Note
- Remove the tappet and shim.
CAUTION:
Do not use any means of marking the shims other than a permanent-type marker. Any scratches or paint on the shims may result in incorrect lash adjustment and severe engine damage.
CAUTION:
The tappets and shims must be installed in their original position to make sure of correct valve lash settings.
Items 3 and 10: Intake and Exhaust Valve Spring Retainer Keys Disassembly Note
- Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and remove the retainer keys.
Items 7 and 14: Intake and Exhaust Valves Disassembly Note
- For component tests of the valve, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION for basic mechanical concerns.
- Lubricate the valve stem and the valve stem seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
Item 15: Cylinder Head Disassembly Note
- For component tests of the cylinder head, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION for basic mechanical concerns.
