Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.

  1. N1 - CHECK CONTINUOUS DTCs

    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Continuous DTCs.
    • Is DTC B2332 present? 
      1. Yes  : GO to  N7.
      2. No  : GO to N2.
  2. N2 - CHECK FOR MECHANICAL FAULTS

    • Disconnect and reconnect the battery.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Clear Instrument Cluster DTCs.
    • Actuate the steering column to the full in position.
    • Actuate the steering column to the full out position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Self-Test.
    • Is DTC B2332 present? 
      1. Yes  : GO to N3.
      2. No  : System was deactivated due to the instrument cluster registering an excessive number of motion faults. NOTIFY the owner that concern has been corrected.
  3. N3 - CHECK STEERING COLUMN BEARINGS

    • Remove the steering column shrouds.
    • Check the steering column bearings to make sure that they are fully seated back against the stops.
    • Are the steering column bearings correctly seated back against the stops? 
      1. Yes  : GO to N4.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new steering column. REFER to STEERING COLUMN  in this section. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. N4 - ISOLATE THE STEERING COLUMN POSITION SENSORS

    • Disconnect: Steering Column Position Sensor C222.
    • Connect a jumper wire between the steering column position sensor C222-4, circuit 9-AL17 (BN/WH), harness side and the steering column position sensor terminal 1.

    • Connect a jumper wire between the steering column position sensor C222-2, circuit 7-AL17 (YE/VT), harness side and the steering column position sensor terminal 4.
    • Connect a jumper wire between the steering column position sensor C222-3, circuit 8-AL17 (WH/VT) and the steering column position sensor terminal 3.
    • Connect a jumper wire between the steering column position sensor C222-1, circuit 8-AL16 (WH/BK) and the steering column position sensor terminal 2.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Self-Test.
    • Is DTC B2332 retrieved? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering column. REFER to STEERING COLUMN  in this section. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : GO to N5.
  5. NOTE: This active command will power motors for only one second.

  6. N5 - CHECK FOR STEERING COLUMN MOVEMENT
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Trigger The Tilt Motor UP Command.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Trigger The Tilt Motor DOWN Command.
    • Does the steering column tilt up and down? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new steering column. REFER to STEERING COLUMN  in this section. Clear the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : GO to N6.
  7. N6 - ISOLATE THE MOTOR

    • Disconnect: Tilt/Telescope Motor C227.
    • Connect a voltmeter between the tilt/telescope motor C227-2, circuit 32-AL6 (WH/BU), harness side, and the tilt/telescope motor C227-1, circuit 33-AL6 (YE/BU), harness side.

    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Trigger The Tilt Motor UP Command.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Trigger The Tilt Motor DOWN Command.
    • Measure the voltage during the active commands.
    • Is voltage present for one second after each command is sent? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new tilt motor. REFER to STEERING COLUMN  in this section. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : GO to N7.
  8. N7 - CHECK CIRCUIT 8-AL17 (WH/VT) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220c-20, circuit 8-AL17 (WH/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is voltage present? 
      1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : GO to N8.
  9. N8 - CHECK CIRCUIT 8-AL17 (WH/VT) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c-20, circuit 8-AL17 (WH/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to N9.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. N9 - CHECK CIRCUIT 8-AL17 (WH/VT) FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c-20, circuit 8-AL17 (WH/VT), harness side and the steering column position sensor C222-3, harness side, circuit 8-AL17 (WH/VT).
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES . REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
