Pinpoint Test O: DTC C1408/C1409: Parking Brake Apply/Release Switch Circuit Out Of Range

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. O1 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH APPLY/RELEASE OUTPUT
NOTE: If DTC C1408 is retrieved, go to step 1. If DTC C1409 is retrieved, go to step 2.
    • Measure the voltage between the EPB switch C3218-4, circuits 10-CG15 (GY/VT) and 9-CG15 (BN/BU) AND ground while the EPB switch is in the idle position and when the EPB switch is pushed down (release active); and between the EPB switch C3218-8, circuits 8-CG15 (WH/BU) and 9-CG15 (BN/BU) and ground, while the EPB switch is in the idle position and when the EPB switch is pulled up (apply active).
    • Do the voltages change from 3.5-4.5 volts (idle range) to 1.5-3.0 volts (switch active range)?
      1. Yes  : If the EPB switch apply voltage is within range, GO to O2. If the EPB switch release voltage is within range, GO to  O3.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new EPB switch. REFER to PARKING BRAKE . RESET the parking brake system. REFER to ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) RESETTING . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. O2 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-CG15 (WH/BU)
    • Disconnect the battery.
    • Disconnect: EPB Switch C3218.
    • Disconnect: EPB Module C4205b.
    • Measure the resistance between the EPB switch C3218-8 and the EPB module C4205b-5, circuit 8-CG15 (WH/BU).
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new EPB switch. REFER to PARKING BRAKE . REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. RESET the EPB system. REFER to ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) RESETTING .
  3. O3 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-CG15 (GY/VT)
    • Disconnect the battery.
    • Disconnect: EPB Switch C3218.
    • Disconnect: EPB Module C4205b.
    • Measure the resistance between the EPB switch C3218-4 and the EPB module C4205b-6, circuit 10-CG15 (GY/VT).
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new EPB module. REFER to PARKING BRAKE . REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. RESET the parking brake system. REFER to ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) RESETTING .
