Removal (4.6L & 5.4L Engines)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. See RECOVERY, EVACUATION & RECHARGING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in GENERAL SERVICING. Remove drive belt. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect compressor harness connector. See Fig 1. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor harness connector. See Fig 2. Loosen compressor bolts to access manifold bolt. See Fig 3. Remove bolt and manifold/tube assembly. See Figure. Remove compressor bolts and remove compressor. See Fig 3. Rotate A/C compressor shaft 6-8 revolutions while collecting oil in a clean measuring device.
