Water Pump - 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L: Installation

    CAUTION: Some vehicle cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A (green color). Others are filled with Motorcraft Premium Gold Coolant VC-7-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B51-A1 (yellow color). Always fill the cooling system with the same coolant that is present in the system. Do not mix coolant types.
  1. Install a new O-ring on the water pump. Coat the new O-ring with engine coolant.
  2. CAUTION: Do not rotate the water pump housing once the water pump has been positioned in the cylinder block. Damage to the O-ring seal will occur.

  3. Install the water pump.
    1. Lubricate the new O-ring seal using engine coolant and install the O-ring seal onto the water pump.
    2. Position the water pump into the engine block.
    3. Install the bolts.
  4. Position the pulley onto the water pump and install the bolts.

  5. Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE .
  6. Install the fan and fan clutch. For additional information, refer to RADIATOR .
  7. Refill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
