Side Curtain Air Bag Module: Removal

Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. When carrying or setting down side curtain air bag module, always point tear seam away from body.
Improper air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. If side curtain air bag has deployed, replace upper A-, B- and C-pillar trim panels and attaching hardware, along with any other damaged components and hardware.
Improper air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Side curtain air bag modules must be installed in vehicle using NEW torque prevailing type "U" nuts (part No. W709759 or W520822). Use of this "U" nut is mandatory, to reduce risk of fastener effectiveness.

When installing a new headliner on a vehicle equipped with side curtain air bags, ensure a headliner made for side curtain air bags is being used. The word "AIRBAG" will appear on the headliner where it meets each B-pillar trim panel.

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove headliner. See HEADLINER .
- Remove side curtain air bag pin-type retainer "A". See Figure , Figure , Figure & Figure . Remove side curtain air bag retaining screws "H". Remove passenger assist handle bracket pin-type retainers "E" and "F". Remove passenger assist handle bracket retaining screws "I" and "J" and assist handle bracket. Repeat passenger assist handle bracket removal procedure for right front assist handle bracket, if servicing right-side curtain air bag module.
- Remove pin-type retainer "B". Remove side curtain air bag retaining screws "G". Remove side curtain air bag retaining screws "F". Remove side curtain air bag retaining screw "D". Remove pin-type retainers "D". Disengage side curtain air bag electrical connector retainer.
- Remove pin-type retainer "A". Remove side curtain air bag retaining screws "B" and "C". Remove side curtain air bag retaining screws "A" and "E". Release side curtain air bag alignment ear, located through sheet metal opening at top of A-pillar. Remove side curtain air bag module.
