Diagnostics Disabling Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and 2004 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
This procedure should only be used when performing air bag system diagnostics.
- Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
- Remove driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE . Install Air Bag Simulators (418-F395) on harness side of clockspring electrical connector, located at top of steering column (in place of air bags). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
- Open glove box door past its stops. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module harness connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on passenger-side air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag).CAUTION: Removing side curtain air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side curtain air bags. Side curtain air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side curtain air bags on these models. Do not remove side curtain air bag bridge resistors unless directed.
- On models equipped with side curtain air bags, pull out on C-pillar trim panel to release retainers. Lower door opening weatherstrip. Slide C-pillar trim panel upwards to release retainers and remove trim panel. Disconnect right side curtain air bag harness connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) on harness side of right side curtain air bag connector. Repeat procedure to disable left side curtain air bag module.
- On models equipped with power seats, connect negative battery cable. On all models, move front seats to highest and most forward position. On models equipped with power seats, disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Disconnect right seat belt pretensioner harness connector, located at right front seat belt buckle. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-133) on harness side of right seat belt pretensioner connectors. Repeat procedure to disable left seat belt pretensioner.
- Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
