Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2011 Mercury Milan, 2011 Lincoln MKZ, and 2011 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING article.
  2. Remove the 6 screws and the underbody shield.
  3. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the RH wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES article.
  5. Remove the 2 retainers and position the RH front fender rear splash shield aside.

  6. Remove and discard the tie-rod end cotter pin and nut.
    • To install, tighten the new nut to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) and install a new cotter pin.
  7. NOTE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle can result.

  8. Using the Tie-Rod End Remover, separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
  9. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch electrical connector.
  10. Remove the engine appearance cover, if equipped.
  11. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering fluid reservoir aside. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM article.
  12. Disconnect the 3 battery cable retainers from the RH valve cover.
  13. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING - 3.5L -- FUSION & MKZ article.
  14. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY TRAY  in this service information.
  15. Remove the bolt and position the battery cable body ground terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  16. Remove the starter motor solenoid terminal cover.
  17. Remove the nut and position the battery cable starter motor B+ terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  18. Remove the nut and position the starter motor solenoid wire terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  19. Disconnect the 3 battery cable retainers from the engine, transaxle support insulator and battery tray mounting bracket.
  20. Remove the bolt and position the battery cable transaxle ground terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  21. Disconnect the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the 2 in-line electrical connectors.
  22. Remove the nut and position the Battery Junction Box (BJB) cable terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  23. Disconnect the 2 degas bottle hose retainers from the battery cable and position aside.
  24. Disconnect the battery cable retainer from the engine harness and the 3 retainers from the intake manifold.
  25. Disconnect the 4 battery cable retainers from the LH valve cover.
  26. Position the generator terminal cover aside, remove the nut and position the generator B+ terminal aside.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  27. Disconnect the battery cable retainer and the generator electrical connector.
  28. Remove the battery cable.
  29. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
