Pinpoint Test F: Control Solenoids

NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Vehicle Harness Connector illustration in Transmission Connector Layouts .
NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Internal Harness Connector illustration in Transmission Connector Layouts .
NOTE: Read and record all DTCs. All Transmission Range (TR) sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) DTCs must be repaired before entering output state control.
NOTE: Use the PID Chart for available diagnostic PIDs. Refer to Diagnostic Parameters Identification (PID) Chart .
  1. F1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS 
    • Select PARK.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Check to make sure the transmission vehicle harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in the connector and are in good condition before proceeding.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Engine idling.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PID List
    • Monitor the appropriate Shift Solenoid Pressure Control PID being tested or Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) PID, refer to the PID Chart in Diagnostic Parameters Identification (PID) Chart .
    • Can the PIDs be monitored or solenoids be commanded? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F2.
    2. NO  : REPEAT procedure to enter PID list. If the vehicle did not enter PID list, REFER to the appropriate Engine Performance article for diagnosis of the PCM.
  2. F2 SOLENOID COMMAND TEST 
    • Monitor the appropriate commanded current PIDs for the solenoid being tested.
    • Select the appropriate solenoid that is to be tested, SSx_AMP or TCC_AMP.
    • Select value: 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.0 amp.
    • Press "SEND".
    • Select another value: 0 - 1.0 amp.
    • Press "SEND".
    • Cancel and return to normal operation.
    • Do the monitored current readings change and match the command? 
    1. YES  : CLEAR the DTCs. ROAD test the vehicle. If symptoms persist, go to Diagnosis By Symptom .
    2. NO  : Go to  F3.
  3. F3 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: Transmission vehicle harness C1385
    • Inspect the connectors for damaged pins.
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between transmission vehicle harness C1385, circuit 391 (RD/YE), harness side and ground using the following chart.
      Transmission Connector Circuit Ground
      C1385-7 391 (RD/YE) Ground
      C1385-20 391 (RD/YE) Ground
      C1385-24 391 (RD/YE) Ground
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit that has less than 10 volts. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. F4 CHECK SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: PCM C1381T
    • Check to make sure the transmission vehicle harness C1385, C1148 and C1381T terminals are fully engaged in the connector and are in good condition before proceeding.
    • Measure the resistance between the transmission vehicle harness C1385 signal pin and the PCM C1381T, harness side using the following chart.

      C1385-3 315 (VT/OG) C1381T-10
      C1385-5 971 (PK/BK) C1381T-11
      C1385-4 236 (BK/LG) C1381T-12
      C1385-1 125 (DB/WH) C1381T-13
      C1385-8 924 (BN/OG) C1381T-14
      C1385-10 480 (VT/YE) C1381-2
    • Is the resistance greater than 0.5 ohm? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR open in the circuit that is faulty. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  F5.
  5. F5 CHECK HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between transmission vehicle harness C1385, harness side and ground using the following chart.
      Transmission Connector Circuit Ground
      C1385-12 237 (OG/YE) Ground
      C1385-3 315 (VT/OG) Ground
      C1385-5 971 (PK/BK) Ground
      C1385-4 236 (BK/LG) Ground
      C1385-1 125 (DB/WH) Ground
      C1385-8 924 (BN/OG) Ground
      C1385-10 480 (VT/YE) Ground
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit for a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. F6 CHECK THE INTERNAL HARNESS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Drain the transmission fluid.
    • Remove the transmission fluid pan.
    • Disconnect: Affected Solenoid
    • Measure the resistance between transmission internal harness C1385 and the associated solenoid connector using the following chart.

      C1385-3 Shift Solenoid Pressure Control B (SSPCB) 2
      C1385-5 Shift Solenoid Pressure Control C (SSPCC) 2
      C1385-4 Shift Solenoid Pressure Control D (SSPCD) 2
      C1385-1 Shift Solenoid Pressure Control E (SSPCE) 2

    • Measure the resistance between transmission internal harness C1385 and the associated solenoid connector using the following chart.
      Transmission Connector Component Pin Number
      C1385-7 TCC/ PCA 1
      C1385-20 SSPCA/ SSPCB 1
      C1385-24 SSPCC/ SSPCD/ SSPCE 1
    • Are the resistances less than 0.5 ohm? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new harness. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. F7 CHECK THE INTERNAL HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between transmission vehicle harness C1385, component side and ground using the following chart.
      Transmission Connector Component Ground
      C1385-20 SSPCA and SSPCB Ground
      C1385-7 TCC/ PCA Ground
      C1385-8 TCC Ground
      C1385-10 PCA Ground
      C1385-12 SSPCA Ground
      C1385-3 SSPCB Ground
      C1385-5 SSPCC Ground
      C1385-4 SSPCD Ground
      C1385-1 SSPCE Ground
      C1385-24 SSPCC/ SSPCD/ SSPCE Ground
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new harness. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. F8 CHECK THE SOLENOID RESISTANCE AT THE SOLENOID

      Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 at each solenoid.
    • Is the resistance between   4.1-4.7 ohms   ? 
    1. YES  : REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom  for diagnosis of pressure concerns. CLEAR the DTCs. Test the system for normal operation. If the condition returns, INSTALL a new PCM.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new solenoid if not within specification. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
