Pinpoint Test A: The Engine Does Not Crank

- A1 CHECK THE BATTERY
- Check the battery condition and charge. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Is the battery OK?
- YES : Go to A2.
- NO : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A2 CHECK THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) AND PCM FOR DTCs
- Check for PATS and PCM DTCs.
- Were any PATS and PCM DTCs retrieved?
- YES : REFER to ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) article to diagnose the PATS DTCs. REFER to appropriate Engine Performance article to diagnose the PCM DTCs.
- NO : Go to A3.
- A3 CHECK THE TR SENSOR PID
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM DataLogger/PID
- While observing the PCM TR sensor PID, place the vehicle in PARK and NEUTRAL.
- Does the PID match the gear selection?
- YES : Go to A4.
- NO : Go to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E to diagnose the TR sensor.
- A4 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE
- Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection at the engine.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to A5.
- NO : INSTALL a new battery ground cable. REFER to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A5 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND
- Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the starter motor case.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to A6.
- NO : CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and make sure the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A6 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE STARTER MOTOR
- Measure the voltage between starter motor solenoid C197A-1, circuit 2037 (RD) and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to A7.
- NO : INSTALL a new positive battery cable. REFER to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A7 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR B-PIN
- Connect one end of a fused jumper wire to starter motor solenoid C197A-1, circuit 2037 (RD). Momentarily connect the other end of the jumper to starter motor solenoid C197B-1, circuit 0113 (Y/LB).
- Did the starter motor engage and the engine crank?
- YES : Go to A8.
- NO : INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to Starter Motor . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A8 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Measure the voltage between starter motor relay pin cavity 30, circuit 1523 (DG) and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to A9.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1523 (DG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- A9 CHECK FOR START REQUEST AT THE STARTER RELAY CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between PDB starter motor relay pin cavity 86, circuit 0032 (RD/LB) with 4R70E/4R75E transmission or circuit 1093 (TN/RD) with a TorqShift® transmission and ground with the ignition switch in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- A10 CHECK THE RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between starter motor relay pin cavity 86, circuit 0032 (RD/LB) with 4R70E/4R75E transmission or circuit 1093 (TN/RD) with a TorqShift® transmission and starter motor relay pin cavity 85, circuit 1419 (LG/YE) with the ignition switch in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- A11 CHECK CIRCUIT 1419 (LG/YE) FOR AN OPEN CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Disconnect: PCM C175B
- Measure the resistance between starter motor relay pin cavity 85, circuit 1419 (LG/YE) and PCM C175B, circuit 1419 (LG/YE), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : DIAGNOSE the PCM. REFER to the appropriate Engine Performance article.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1419 (LG/YE). TEST the system for normal operation.
- A12 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT FUSE 33 CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: CJB 33 (10A)
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between CJB fuse 33 cavity A53, circuit 33 (WH/PK) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- A13 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR AN OPEN CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: CJB Fuse 33 (10A)
- Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
- Measure the resistance between instrument panel fuse 33 cavity A66, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and digital TR sensor C167-12, circuit 1093 (TN/RD), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to A14.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1093 (TN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
- A14 CHECK CIRCUIT 0032 (RD/LB) FOR AN OPEN CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
- Measure the resistance between starter motor relay pin cavity 86, circuit 0032 (RD/LB) and digital TR sensor C167-10, circuit 0032 (RD/LB), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 0032 (RD/LB). TEST the system for normal operation.
- A15 CHECK CIRCUIT 1050 (LG/VT) FOR POWER CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-2, circuit 1050 (LG/VT), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to A16.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1050 (LG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
- A16 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH
- Carry out the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
- Does the ignition switch test good?
- YES : REPAIR circuit 0033 (WH/PK). TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : INSTALL a new ignition switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A17 CHECK THE CIRCUIT TO THE STARTER MOTOR CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Solenoid C197B
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Measure the resistance between starter motor C197B-1, circuit 0113 (YE/LB) and starter motor relay pin cavity 87, circuit 0113 (YE/LB).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : INSTALL a new starter motor relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 0113 (YE/LB). TEST the system for normal operation.
